Third Time by Dalia Hibbs. September 2013

Third Time is a 1999 chestnut OTTB.  He is 17.1 hands and about 1200 pounds.  Third Time won one and placed in several races.  He was used as a pony horse and was bought be be Deb’s next horse, but she will be looking for a shorter horse.  You can see his pedigree here and his race record here.

We don’t know a lot about Third Times past, besides that he was a pony horse after he raced.  In his little over three years on the ranch he has enjoyed being a pasture ornament.  He has been shown the trails and seemed to take it all as he does everything in stride.  He is a great riding horse.  Deb has actually ridden him in the yard and he was great.  It’s just a very long way up and down.

Third Time by Dalia Hibbs. Septmber 2014

Third Time knows all the standard race horse things:  Load, stands for the shoer, takes baths, is easy to catch.  He is current on his shots and worming.  Third Time is not a very beginner’s horse, but is very willing.  He does know speed, but has to be asked to show it.  He is a cribber.

Third Time was sold on July 4th to two wonderful teenagers that will spoil him loads. Contact us to make an appointment to see one of our other horses.

Reddie Whip

Reddie Whip

Dalia and Reddie Whip aka Whippit
Dalia and Reddie Whip aka Whippit

Reddie Whip is a 2002 dark bay TB gelding who we got in August 2007.  Remember I don’t name them.  These are the names on their papers.  We nicked named him Whippit.  Whippit is probably around 15 ish hands and 1000 pounds.  You can see his pedigree here and his race record here.

Dalia and Whippit swimming in Oologah Lake.
Dalia and Whip on the trail.

Whippit has a pretty regular rider.  He and Dalia hit it off and have been pretty regular riding buddies for several years.  Dalia has taken Whip on many trail rides all over Oklahoma. Whip loves his life at the Sierra Ranch.  He loves it better when Dalia can come ride or groom him.  Dalia owns Whippit as of July 20, 2013.  Whip and Dalia learned a great deal at the boarding facility, but came back to Sierra Ranch on March 1, 2014.

Dalia asked for the winner picture from Whippit’s previous owner, Anne Landers,  and so we added it here. You can see his race record in the links above. This is her description of how she acquired Whippit and his life with her:   We acquired him as a payment on an RV we had sold and was financing. I took him on a hunter pace and did all the jumps on it just a week after he had raced when we first got him. He was always a really quiet horse that did about anything you wanted to do with him. He really liked to run in the longer races but we won with him going 5 or 5 1/2 furlongs. He was ridden in this pic by a good friend Rich Vasquez, he has the distinction of winning more official races on a single day than any other jockey in American racing history… I think 11! On the hunter pace there were 8 water crossings and Whip was leading the rest of the horses in our group across! No one could believe he was a racehorse or had just recently been run.

Dalia and Whip love to ride the trails.  If you want to ride with them contact us at Sierra Ranch.

Pals Daisy Anna – Daisy in the pasture spring 2012

Pals Daisy Anna is a 2007 gray TB mare.  She stands about 15.3 hands.  We got in August 2010 to take to the trails and ride some.  She has grown on our hearts and is a bit too old to take back to the track.  You can see her pedigree here and her race record here.

Dalia riding Daisy in the front pasture.

Daisy still has not made it to the trails, but several people have ridden her around the ranch.  The picture is of Dalia riding Daisy shortly after she came to the ranch.

Dalia talking to Daisy as she is coming to the ranch.

Daisy is loving her life on the ranch and being retired from the race horse life.  She is one of the more inquisitive horses.  It’s hard to get a picture of her and not get her nose.

Daisy knows all the standard racehorse things:  Load, stands for the shoer, takes baths, is easy to catch.  She is current on her shots and worming.  If you want a challenge Daisy is the horse for you.  She is not a beginner’s horse but is very willing.  We are just waiting for the right time to take her to the trails and teach her what real riding is about.

See more pictures on Facebook!

Daisy is for sale for $2500  or best offer.  If you would like to meet Daisy  Contact us to make an appointment to see her or one of our other horses.

Horses Grazing Summer Pastures

Succulent swathes of summer grazing pasture can provide temporary relief to a horse owner’s wallet in the form of reduced hay and feed bills. But at the same time, many owners report unwanted weight gain in horses consuming this lush forage. Read More

As tough as steamy summers can be on humans, they can be even tougher on horses. That’s because instead of choosing how they’ll deal with the heat, horses often have to depend on us to make the right management choices for them. Read More

Henry the Fish

Henry the Fish

July 12, 2012 by Deborah Palinksee

Henry the Fish by Dailia Hibbs
Henry the Fish going to his last race.

Henry the Fish was a 2001 dark bay TB gelding.  He was about 16 hands and about 1100 pounds.  Fish was a four time winner.  Click here to his race record. Click here to see his catalog page.  Fish lost his battle with a shoulder problem on September 10, 2012.

Fish began his retraining in winter 2007.  Fish had some race injuries that healed with time and he needed some time to take it easy.  He  took

Henry the Fish giving kisses at the track.

very well to retraining.  I loaded the video to our You-Tube channel of him riding and giving lessons in the pasture.

The summer of 2009 Fish has an accident in the pasture.  We will never be sure exactly what happened or what damage he did, however the best we can tell he broke or dislocated his shoulder.  Fish is a fighter.  Everytime I thought I might have to do something drastic he would come back.  He wants to live and now has recovered enough to run and play in the pasture with all the horses.  He will never be ridable to anything more than a kid, but he is truely a lovable horse.

Henry the Fish. Gotta love thos ears!

Fish had a very unquie look about him.  Notice his ears.  They curve inward more than other TB’s.  I was told by the trainer that he was a bit inquisitive at the track.  He could get out of his stall and would go wondering.  Maybe that was what he did in the woods to his shoulder.  He has not done such at the ranch, but then we have not given him the chance to be silly.

Fish did all the standard horse things:  Load, stands for the shoer, takes baths, is easy to catch.    Contact us to make an appointment to see  one of our other horses.

Coin Charger

June 13, 2012 by Deborah Palinksee

Coin Charger going to his last race.
Coin Charger going to his last race.

Coin Charger is a 1999 dark bay TB gelding by Royal Pennant – Miss Music Coin, by Pocket Coin. He is about 16 hands and about 1100 pounds.  He was foaled May 27, 1999. Charger is an Oklahoma-bred winner of 3 races for $18,296. He has turned into a great pet and is currently being retrained to do pleasure riding. Click here to see his catalog page and race record.

Charger going to race Feb. 25, 2006

Charger is a very handsome horse with a very neat and unique personality. He tried very hard for us at the track, however, I think he was just done with racing. Rick bought Charger at the Tulsa stockyard sale on Rick’s 50th birthday. Rick has thought of making Charger his spare, however, Rick really likes mares. Ashley has ridden Charger in the pasture.  Charger has been having some issues with riding. He was a bit anxious at first thinking he was going back into training. We hope to take Charger on his first of many trail rides when he finally meets his rider. Charger is a winner with a winning attitude. Charger needs a very experienced rider and a bond before he begins riding.

Charger in the pasture.

Charger does all the standard ex-race horse things: Load, stands for the shoer, takes baths, is easy to catch. You can tell that from the pictures in the pasture. He is always the first one to greet you in the pasture. He is current on his shots and worming. Charger returned from the track with no leg problems unlike many of the ex-race horses. However, he has limited sight in his left eye and tends to be a bit spooky on that side until he trusts you.  This has been our challenge with riding Charger. He will occasionally let folks he likes on his back and ride for a bit, but more often that not he will either not let you on him or toss you at will after getting on.

Charger will be a great horse when he meets that one person he will let ride him again. If you feel up to the challenge of a very different kind of ex-race horse, please contact us. Charger and Talent will probably always be in our care until they go over the Rainbow bridge. If you would like to help support them please click the button below.

Charger passed over the rainbow bridge the summer of 2016 and is buried with other greats in the Sierra Ranch, LLC pasture.

Dr. Hawkeye

Dr. Hawkeye

June 13, 2012 by Deborah Palinksee

Dr. Hawkeye going to race in June 2004

Dr. Hawkeye is a 1999 dark bay thoroughbred gelding.  He is about 16.2 hands and about 1100 pounds.  Dr. Hawkeye is an Iowa bred, born on April 26, 1999 by Parfaitement – Denali’s Year, by Colonel Herring.  You can see his pedigree here.

Dr. Hawkeye aka Hawk (2005)

He had 16 starts on the track with no wins.  You can see his results by clicking here.  He is a great long distance horse.  Unfortunately, while in training May 2005 he kicked something and injured his back sesamoid.  He is healed and is transitioned well to a riding horse.

Hawk Jan. 21, 1012 by Dalia Hibbs

Hawk was never tired in any distance when he raced; he just didn’t have the greatest speed for a race horse.  He never broke his maiden.  We have had his leg x rayed and he is sound.  He will be good for trail, low jumps, and English pleasure.  He loves to trail ride and will take you up the steepest mountain and back down with the greatest of ease.

September 2013
September 2013

Dr. Hawkeye was trained to trail ride by his own doctor.  Michelle Brotherton owned and rode Dr. Hawkeye on the trails for several years.  She decided she wanted a more challenging horse and moved up to Charming Starr.  Hawk and Michelle were a great match while she was learning to ride a ex-race horse and Hawk was learning the trails.

Here is a video of Hawk riding in the pasture in January 2014.

Hawk does all the  standard race horse things.  He loads, stands for the shoer, and the vet.  He is ready to finish into the horse you want. Hawk is available for sale, lessons, trail riding, and lease.  Hawk is currently being leased by his new owner. We hope to see them out on the trails soon! Please contact us if you would like more information about other horses for sale or lease.
