Showing the Flag

Showing the Flag

September 2, 2013 by Deborah Palinksee

Showing the Flag

Showing the Flag is a 2001 dark bay TB gelding.  He is about 16 hands and about 1100 pounds.  Flag never won a race, but it was not for lack of trying or the best trainers.  He just didn’t understand he was to be in front.   Flag is well bred.  He was bred in Kentucky.  He is by Miesque’s Son out of No Place But Win by Take Your Place.  He is the half brother to Roany Pony an Oklahoma Stakes Winner.  You an see his catalog page here.

Showing the Flag – 2006

Flag began his retraining in spring 2006.  He is very willing to learn a new 10372947_10154246776135655_7824721523080562566_ojob and seems to like pleasure riding.  Flag is the most handsome horse we have ever seen and everyone who sees him agrees.  He is the perfect show prospect.  He has perfect confirmation, handsome head, perfect neck set, and perfect carriage.  In fact his stud fee alone was $10,000.  Flag is a real bargain for anyone looking for a real quality show horse.

He does all the standard horse things:  Load, stands for the shoer, takes baths, is easy to catch.  He is current on his shots and worming.  Flag will be a great all round horse for anything you want to do.

Amber has been trail riding Flag and he has proven to be the most trust worthy of all trial horses.  We took him Memorial Day weekend 2007 and he stood tied to the high line for the first time just like a pro.  It did not stress him to travel and he performed wonderfully on the trail even crossing stuff that more experienced trial horses balked at.

Showing the Flag 2006

On August 25, 2007 he earned another trail badge.  Amber was riding Flag at Oologah Lake when she encountered ground bees.  Flag jumped, but did not run off with her.  When they got home Flag had over 100 stings, but managed to keep his head and perform like a well seasoned trail horse.  Course you know this means that with Amber riding Flag Deb gets to keep riding Maverick.  Amber trained Maverick for Deb, so she just might be doing the same with Flag.  🙂  Only time will tell.

Flag is currently being leased by his new owner. We hope to see them out on the trails soon!

Raider Rags

Raider Rags

May 14, 2013 by Deborah Palinksee

raider92505a
Ashley and Raider – September 2005

Raider Rags is a 1989 registered AQHA gelding even though he looks like a thoroughbred.  Click here to see his pedigree.

Raider came to us after learning how to barrel race and pole bend and even  jumps.  Raider had had many different owners in his time and wanted a place to retire.  Ashley took him to several barrel races and trail rides when she lived near us.

Ashley and Raider – September 2005

Raider loves girls.  He loves to teach them to barrel race and pole bend.  He is good at barrel racing, but pole bending is his best sport.  He is so big he looked like he was moving in slow motion compared to other horses competing.  raider love trail rides and will jump anything you ask him to.  Ashley has had him jumpin3-footot fences bareback.

Raider went to live with his owner Ashley in February 2016. He loved her and let her do most anything on him.

3 Things You Need for Trail Riding (and Ladies, the Third One Might Surprise You)

Good ‘ol hindsight.

Now that I’ve survived my first competitive trail ride hosted by the American Competitive Trail Association, I thought I’d pass along some of my hard-earned wisdom so that you can learn from my lack of preparation.

1. Know what to do if your horse doesn’t move forward like you want him to.

I really, really wish I had re-read Goodnight’s Guide to Great Trail Riding-a How-to for You and Your Horse before the ACTHA ride.

Winsome Love

Winsome Love

April 18, 2013 by Deborah Palinksee

Winsome Love – Winter 2008

Winsome Love came to live with us in December 2008.  She is Xanadu Love‘s mother.  This makes her a special horse to us.  Winsome is a 1985 Roan TB mare.  She had two foals.  She raced and won two races.  She was starved and covered in ticks when we found her.

Winsome with Mel - May 2010
Winsome with Mel – May 2010

Winsome is one of the older horses at Sierra Ranch.  She has given lessons and trail rode on occasion   When we first got her she actually was smooth enough to allow the girl who leased her to text while at a canter.  Lately, she has been a great pasture buddy to the other old horses.  First she was Melanie’s buddy, then Sarge’s, and now is loving life with Maverick.

Winsome with Sarge - Summer 2012
Winsome with Sarge – Summer 2012

Winsome still rides occasionally  She has an issue with a back ankle that makes her not want to ride much.  She also has some typical issues that grays have with cancer tumors.  For the most part she is very healthy for an older horse.  You can see her race record and pedigree by clicking on the links.

Winsome was laid to rest on August 12, 2013.  She had been battling cancer and we were loosing the battle.  She is not in pain and running free with the other horses from Sierra Ranch.

Maverick

Maverick

April 18, 2013 by Deborah Palinksee

Amber and Maverick – August 2003

Maverick, aka Bound To Stardom was one amazing horse.  Maverick was born on March 4, 1990 and died very peacefully on October 30, 2013.

Maverick came to us just after we bought Sierra Ranch.  The previous owner knew he was a TB, and had ridden him some on trails.  Her hubby had rodeoed on him, so he knew lots of things.  One thing he knew most was that to get people off he would run what he thought was fast.  Then he met Amber.  She got on him bareback and ran him and laughed.  Amber rode Maverick for several years.  When She left home it was my turn.

Deb and Maverick – August 2007

Rick had purposely not had anyone ride Maverick for several weeks.  He saddled him and had me ride him around the house.  Maverick was tall compared to my old stand by Sarge.  But he was so calm and loved having me ride him.  Sarge hated riding in the pasture, but Maverick didn’t care.  He was so laid back that most folks didn’t really think he was a TB.

Our friend Dan and Mav on the trail in June 2010
Our friend Dan and Mav on the trail in June 2010

Maverick was born in CA in 1990.  Somehow he got to Oklahoma, and we are glad for that.  Our next door neighbor was a trainer in CA and knew his breeders.  We know from riding Mav that he is slow for a race horse.  He never raced at all.  He was tatooed and that is how we found his real name, but unlike all the other exes, Mav has stuck.  Bound for Stardom just doesn’t fit.  The vet told me last year he was now considered an old horse.  Just something a woman does not want to hear.

Maverick and Deb on their last ride October 26, 2013
Maverick and Deb on their last ride October 26, 2013

Maverick had become the go to lesson horse, since the passing of some of the other go to lesson horses.  He had a great attitude and would ride the same with little kids or adults.  You had to show him you know how to ride, and then he would perform.  Maverick had taken folks on the trail from kids to Viet Nam Vets.  He was the same with everyone.  Slow and steady until you get the feel and he would then go at a bit more speed.

Maverick is running the green pastures of heaven with other Sierra Ranch, LLC horses that have passed over the rainbow  bridge.  If you would like to lease or learn to ride on an awesome horse, please contact us!

News You Can Use – April 2013

April 1, 2013 by Deborah Palinksee

Did you survive the winter with your horses? We have and are getting ready to ride more. We take a break more in the winter as our other business picks up more in the cooler months.

We will be offering more lessons and possible trail rides, so call to schedule a time to meet the horses.

Here are some articles to get you ready for Spring:

Pasture Safety Checklist

Pastures are like laundry—they’re never “done” and need to be kept up with. What may be intact in the spring may need repair by fall, so regular inspections should be part of your barn chores. And, even though your pasture may appear safe, it can harbor many hazards. Remember, if there’s one out there, your horse will find it. Here are some things to look out for as you do a spring pasture safety check.More »

Feeding for Immunity

Working with a veterinarian and nutritionist to determine what and how to feed your horse–while minimizing animals’ stress–goes a long way toward keeping horses hale and hearty. Read More

Springtime

Time for a Spring Tune-Up

Keeping your equine partner “healthy as a horse” is a worthy objective that can be achieved with some thoughtful strategies and collaboration with your veterinarian. A springtime tune-up is key in preparing your horse for the active riding season ahead. It can also protect him against illnesses that become more prevalent with warmer weather and during contact with other horses at events. More »
