Talent

Talent

Talent loves to eat!

Talent has led a hard and easy life. He is from great thoroughbred racing stock. His sire is Indy Talent, but I don’t have his papers or know his dam’s name, so I don’t know his real name. He was born in 2003. We got him in June 2006 at the Tulsa Stockyards sale. Of course being sold as a great starter horse and future hunter jumper.

With such a great racing father, we had our neighbor (who owns Indy Talent) call the past owner and breeder to see why they sold him at the sale. Turns out Talent had a stifle issue from birth and had surgery on it twice to try to correct it.  Since he was lame, they took him to the sale to recoup some costs.

I asked our neighbor why they didn’t just put him down since he had the potential of hurting someone when his knee finally gave way. My ex-husband heard “put him down” and got one of our boarders to buy him from us so I would not “put him down.” I had no intentions of doing this. I know to race folks this is a business and having a foal that had a defect would be something that one wouldn’t want folks to know.

Talent

Anyhow, our boarder has his papers, And somewhere and some time along the way we got all of her horses back, so Talent is a permanent resident at Sierra Ranch, LLC. He has a limp on his back leg that has white on it. It’s more prominent above a walk, but I can pick him out of a crowd at a walk.

Talent has been ridden by the second step kid. It’s just we will not know when that knee will go out, and he will have to be put down. He has lived here many years, and kinda likes the easy life. He is my 1200 pound dog. He will probably stay here until he dies. He could only be used as a therapy animal and not ridden.

Talent was laid to rest on June 6, 2016. His limp was getting much worse and you could hear grinding in his joint, I didn’t want him to break a leg in the mud and muck in the pasture. He is buried in the front pasture with several of his old buddies.

Corky

Corky

March 30, 2015 by Deborah Palinksee

1471994_10202223618449301_1911192406_n - CopySomeone asked me one day why this wonderful horse was not on our website.  I have been busy working on selling off some horses, so it’s time to get back to adding the ones that will stay around.1907598_10203237239149185_3158501382597787016_n - Copy

This is Corky. He is a 1992 model MFT who was owned by my friend Dawn Hackney. He is retired from riding and had a injury at his last retirement home, so we have let him have a year off. We have recently been riding him to see if the injury will allow him to work a bit and he seems to like giving lessons. We were told that he would never do mountainous trail riding again, but he seems fine with wondering around the pasture.

Corky and New were pastured together when he first came, so usually when you see New you will see Corky.

Want to come take lessons on Corky?  Call and set an appointment.  918-607-6094.

We have all the trailers, tack, and safety equipment to teach you everything you need to learn to ride.

Henry the K

Henry the K

August 30, 2014 by Deborah Palinksee

Henry the K

Henry the K – Oct 24, 2010

This is the story of the next great horse at Sierra Ranch, LLC. Let’s start this off right.  If you see this horse for sale then you know I am getting out of horses. Click on the pictures to see them full-size.

HenryK
Henry the K – Oct 24, 2010

Henry the K, barn name K, is a 2005 Kentucky-bred gray thoroughbred gelding that has an amazing past.  He is by Tactical Cat our of Cherokee Spell by Cherokee Run  You can see his race record here.  And his pedigree here.

K giving lessons
K giving lessons

K came to Sierra Ranch, LLC on October 24, 2010, after a friend of my ex’s bought him at the infamous Jones Horse Sale.  She saw who and what he was and snatched him up.  At the time, I just thought he was another ex, but he has proved to be so much more.

K with Narina

Looking at his race record you can see he ran 24 times for a little over $44k.  He won four times. Placed six other times. Not a bad record. Then looking at his pedigree you can see that he was sold as a yearling for $17,000. And folks think that asking $1000 for an “older” horse is crazy.

Henry the K is an amazing lessons horse.  He is very tolerant of those learning to ride.  If you show him you know how to ride he will be a bit more challenging.  There is no money in the world at this time that could buy him.  I spent the last several months evaluating all our horses and trying to determine who would be my next horse. And I am so lucky to call K that.

I am also lucky to have several folks who has ridden Maverick ride K.  And the verdict is that K is very much like Maverick. I need to have Amber ride K to be certain since she is probably the only person I know who rode Maverick at 10, but K seems to be fitting the bill of next horse for me.

When you see pictures of our horses on our Facebook page you will see lots of pictures of K.  K will meet you in the pasture, ask if you have treats, and escort you to the other horses. You have to love a friendly horse.

UPDATE: May 25, 2016. This Spring K was not filling out the way he should. We suspected lots of things. I took K to OSU to be evaluated on April 13th. They ran many tests, worked on his teeth and performed a sonogram. During the sonogram, a mass was found in his abdominal cavity very close to his front legs. All the tests determined there was no infection present, but the vets suggested 30 days of antibiotic and for him to come retest in 30 days.  Yesterday was K’s retest day. The mass had grown considerably. My friends and I evaluated the options. Due to the location and possibility of recovery surgery was not an option. I donated K to OSU to use for teaching purposes. Besides, the mass he had a heart mummer. They will put K down and evaluate the mass. I feel certain it is cancer, but the vets are still considering that as unlikely. K gained 50 lbs over the last 30 days with us feeding him very well twice a day. He was eating well and had plenty of grass. He should have gained more weight. It was one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make. I was thankful that OSU didn’t ask for payment yesterday, but know the bill will come eventually. If your would like to donate to Henry the K’s vet bill, please feel free to click on the button below.

Asking for donations is difficult.  Trust me. Thank you in advance for your donations.

K you will be missed by everyone you let ride you. But I miss you greeting me in the pasture even more than I will miss you being the best riding partner ever.
